Sea TREK®, the California-based helmet diving program, turns 20!

July 2019 – Sub Sea Systems’ SeaTREK helmet diving program celebrates 20 years. SeaTREK is a guided helmet diving tour for non-divers and non-swimmers and is available at over 50 locations on 5 continents in 26 countries. With 3 million participants and counting, SeaTREK is the largest and most successful helmet diving program in the world.

“Our company is focused on making our oceans accessible through product innovation and comprehensive operating programs. SeaTREK has proven to be an extremely popular guest experience,” shares Jim Mayfield, President and CEO of Sub Sea Systems. “From a small start-up to an internationally recognized company– it’s an entrepreneurial dream! We pride ourselves on hard work, quality products, the highest safety standards and top-notch customer service. Exploring the World’s oceans has been a fascination of mine since childhood; SeaTREK has enabled our company to share this passion with a wide range of participants, from ages 8 to 93+, many of whom may never have had an opportunity to explore underwater otherwise.”

In July 1999, the very first SeaTREK location opened at Xcaret Park near Cancun Mexico– 582 guests participated that month. This past July, nearly 20,000 guests participated in a SeaTREK tour at Xcaret (albeit a significantly expanded program).

SeaTREK also immerses guests on the ‘other side’ of the acrylic, with tours currently offered at 18 aquarium facilities worldwide– including the Atlantis properties in Dubai, Bahamas and China, Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, Miami Seaquarium, OdySea aquarium in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Bass Pro’s Wonders of Wildlife in Missouri, to name a few. “Presently, we’re seeing a large growth in the aquarium market,” says Hannah de Bie, VP of Marketing, “Consumers seek unique, immersive experiences, while aquariums are looking for ways to promote an edu-tainment platform and attract new and repeat visitors; SeaTREK is a proven answer.”

In 2015, a program for guests with limited mobility, called “Adapted SeaTREK,” was introduced at Native Diving in Lanzarote, Spain. Participants use a SeaTREK helmet and specialized underwater wheelchair, making the underwater world accessible to an even broader demographic.

The success of SeaTREK is largely attributed to its international network of trained, certified and insured SeaTREK Guides, Training Coordinators and operators. “SeaTREK’s dedicated professionals offer the highest level of patience, care, safety and a shared enthusiasm about our oceans. These individuals are our ambassadors– spreading and inspiring love, passion and care for the ocean,” shares Carl Hanson, Director of Sea TREK Water Operations & Safety.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, SeaTREK is sharing photos and fun facts from the last 20 years on social. Follow SeaTREK on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
